Location: Cincinnati, Ohio

Task: A new construction sports stadium requested 3D laser scanning services of the structural steel that wrapped around the perimeter of the stadium. TruePoint captured point cloud data and aligned it to the client’s existing 3D model.

Challenge: Our client on this project specializes in the design, fabrication, and installation of large-scale exterior signage. They were interested in verifying the centerlines of the structural steel framework that their components would be fitted to. All components would be manufactured off site, so it was important to have accurate as built conditions of the structural steel.

Solutions: Laser scanning was performed from the main concourse with a Leica P50 ScanStation. In a few hours, TruePoint was able to scan all of the steel members without interrupting the other construction work occurring at the site. The resulting point cloud precisely depicted exact dimensions of the structural steel.

Deliverable: TruePoint expedited delivery of the point cloud aligned to the client’s 3D model and JetStream Viewer files via an online ShareFile site. A hard drive was also sent to the client.

Added Value: The value of our services was recognized almost immediately on this project. Upon reviewing the data TruePoint provided, the client noticed that the steel on the north and south ends of the stadium did not align with what their design plans specified. As a result, our client and the project’s general contractor made arrangements for the steel in these areas to be corrected. As a final check, TruePoint was called to rescan the stadium to ensure that the structural members sat within an acceptable tolerance. This serves as a perfect example of the importance of accurate as built conditions of structural steel to prefabricators.
