Laser Scan Point Cloud for Theatre Seating

Point Cloud for Theatre Seating Replacement

Accurate point cloud data allowed the client’s architectural technicians to create the best layout plan for optimal audience viewing, while maximizing the theatre’s seating capacity.

    Location: Arrow Rock, Missouri

Task: 3D laser scan the historic Lyceum Theatre’s interior seating area and lobby for our client to design and install updated audience seating.

    Problem:

    • The Lyceum is one of Missouri’s oldest professional regional theatres, featuring a 416-seat auditorium, currently showing Broadway-caliber shows to over 30,000 people annually.
    • Our client designs and manufactures custom performance seating for a wide range of venues, including arenas, theaters, stadiums, concert halls, and auditoriums.
    • They required precise theatre dimensions and locations to design and validate the seating layout before proceeding with manufacturing and installation.
    • This client is headquartered in Montreal Canada, over 1,200 miles away from Arrow Rock, Missouri. They required 3D point cloud data for virtual design planning.

    Solution:

    • 54 scans were taken in one half-day on site with the Leica P40 and the RTC360 laser scanners.
    • The scan data documented the current seats, columns, floors, walls, ceilings, stairs, anchor locations, and electrical outlets.
    • Colorized point cloud data was delivered to the client to create a theatre seating plan, with information on the number of seats, layout of the floor seating area, and row spacing.

    Benefits:

    • 3D laser scanning equipment collects the most precise measurements possible, 2-6 mm accuracy with the Leica laser scanners used on this site.
    • Accurate point cloud data allowed the client’s architectural technicians to create the best layout plan for optimal audience viewing, while maximizing the theatre’s seating capacity.
    • GPRS has captured as-built data for over a dozen theatre seating renovation projects for this client.

What Can the Client Do With the Point Cloud Data?

    • Take accurate measurements between any two points in the auditorium.
    • Measure the width and available legroom for each seat, and accurately determine the narrowest point of each row and aisle.
    • Ensure they are in compliance with all regulations, including ADA.
    • Model the existing stairs and make changes virtually before committing to them physically.
    • Examine sightlines and predict the quality of the view from any seat in the building.

Point cloud data is a powerful tool. Point clouds are essentially the simplest form of 3D models. They are collections of individual points plotted in a 3D space.
