TruePoint’s in-house team of engineers created a 2D drawing the client could use to prefabricate the window frame; saving time, money and field changes.

Case Study: 3D Laser Scanning and 2D Drawing Provided for Historic Church

Location: Lansing, Michigan

Task: The front façade of a church with a large stained-glass window was damaged during a high wind storm. During the damage assessment, the client discovered that the wood frame holding the stained-glass window in place was rotted. TruePoint provided high definition laser scanning services to capture the exact window dimensions for the client to design a new aluminum frame.

Challenge: The front facade was unstable and in danger of falling. The window was 15' off the ground and extended an additional 30' upwards. Traditional methods of measuring would have been dangerous and time consuming, and would not provide level of detail or accuracy the client needed.

Solutions: The instability and elevation made laser scanning the best option for the client. The stained-glass window was quickly and safely 3D laser scanned from the ground, capturing the exact dimensions for the client. The point cloud data captured by the Leica laser scanner could be revisited should questions arise. TruePoint’s in-house team of engineers created a 2D drawing the client could use to prefabricate the window frame; saving time, money and field changes.

Deliverables: TruePoint delivered point cloud data and a 2D drawing tracing all visible features and masonry of the overall window frame.

Added Value: According to the BIM Center web site, cost savings due to clash detection in the industry is about $17,000 per detected clash. Using laser scanning to create an accurate 3D model allows for prefabrication and clash detection prior to the installation of new piping or equipment. Mistakes which normally would have been discovered on the site can now be seen in the office even before anyone sets foot on the site. This saves both time and money.
