Location: Houston, TX

Task: TruePoint 3D laser scanned NRG Stadium in Houston, Texas to document the existing spatial layout. The client desired to capture general site features, walls, columns, roof members and equipment footprint. A 3-dimensional model was created in Revit 2021.

Challenge: The client needed the general stadium layout initially, but questioned whether they would need more detail in the seating or other parts of the stadium at a later date that would require a revisit to the site to gather more measurements.

Solution: TruePoint’s project manager 3D laser scanned the entire stadium with a Leica laser scanner, including the potential scope additions. The CAD technicians can model the initial request and return to the project at a later date if more modeling is needed.

Deliverables: TruePoint CAD technicians delivered an Autodesk Recap point cloud and a Revit 2021 3D model. The lower and upper bowls, roof structure, spectator stands, and the players’ entry tunnel were modeled in LOD 100 while the field topography, goal posts and LED display screens were modeled in LOD 300 to meet the specific requirements of the client. The client requested that the model be exported into Autodesk Maya (.FBX format) AutoCAD Solids (.DWG format), and Navisworks 2021 (.NWC format). Also, since not all of the client’s staff has the necessary software licenses or expertise to use these software packages, the client used Autodesk Viewer, a free online viewer, to view the 3D model in their web browser. All models and point clouds were uploaded to a secured cloud-based delivery system for quick access.
