Task: TruePoint provided high definition laser scanning services for 2,000 square feet of mechanical space in a wastewater treatment facility in Dallas, Texas. The task was to capture structural columns, beams, mechanical equipment, piping, conveyors and large bore piping.
Challenge: The client was designing a new conveyor system to improve plant efficiency. The mechanical space was complex and the client desired to document the area to have exact measurements and visualize all obstructions to expedite the conveyor design.
Solutions: Laser scanning is a great way to develop accurate 3D models that aid in project design. It is a cost-effective method for clash detection and reduces change orders, field re-work, and schedule delays due to clashes that would have otherwise gone undetected.
Deliverables: TruePoint provided 3D laser scanning services and delivered a 3D model for the client to design the new conveyor and aid in clash detection. The client plans to overlay the design model into the point cloud. TruePoint delivered a point cloud file in Autodesk Recap. TruePoint engineers also ran the data though ClearEdge 3D Edgewise software to process piping and build custom libraries specific for this client's needs.
