Case Study: Laser Scanning a Mechanical Room in a Colorado Wastewater Treatment Facility

Location: Fort Collins, Colorado

Task: TruePoint provided high definition laser scanning services for a mechanical room in a wastewater treatment facility in Ft. Collins, CO. The task was to capture the existing conditions of the belt press room and conveyor room, capturing all structural columns, beams, mechanical equipment, piping, conveyors and large bore piping.

Challenge: The client needed the current conditions captured to design a new layout for the unused area. The space was complex and the client desired to document the area to have exact measurements and visualize all obstructions to expedite the new design.

Solutions: Laser scanning is a great way to develop accurate 3D models that aid in project design. It is a cost-effective method for clash detection and reduces change orders, field re-work, and schedule delays due to clashes that would have otherwise gone undetected.

Deliverables: TruePoint provided the client with TruViews and .pod files so they could utilize the data in Microstation. The scanning was done as a colorized point cloud so 274 pictures were taken after each scan was completed to create a 360-degree dimensionally accurate photo overlaid on top of the point cloud which allows measurements to be taken directly from the photos. This gave a real-world view of the area and the colors of piping.

Added Value: Architects and engineers can make critical design decisions sooner with accurate data from laser scanning. Designers can creatively utilize the point cloud data directly for construction documents, minimizing their drawing or modeling hours. And since the point cloud includes everything that the scanner was able to “see” it is more comprehensive than what would be modeled. In addition, the point cloud is not subject to human interpretation as it is captured exactly as it was in the field; whereas, drawings and models have a human element to them.
