Task: TruePoint performed 3D laser scanning services for a 435' railroad track to accurately capture ground penetrating radar (GPR) markings of existing rebar. TruePoint technicians scanned the railroad track and created 2D AutoCAD drawings for the client. The client needed to perform platform repair, fabrication and installation of steel splice assemblies.
Challenge: The client had to shut down the track for 3d scanning and had a 6-hour window to complete this project. Additional crews were on site to perform maintenance during this time.
Solutions: In less than 6 hours, GPRS marked the rebar and TruePoint captured the GPR markings on the railroad track with a Leica laser scanner. These scanners deliver an outstanding range, speed and the highest quality 3D data to the client. TruePoint did not interfere with the other crews performing maintenance and the track re-opened as soon as laser scanning was finished.
Deliverable: TruePoint delivered intensity map point cloud files, 2D drawings of the GPR markings, and black and white TruViews to the client. TruViews are a powerful tool for the client. The TruView site map shows each of the scanner locations marked with a yellow triangle and the name of the scan. This allows the user to navigate, take measurements, and move between scanner locations as wanted, and utilizes your web browser so there is no need for expensive CAD software.
Added Value: TruePoint was able to capture the existing conditions and provide deliverables quickly. Locating and documenting rebar will ensure safe and efficient drilling and expedite fabrication and installation. And since the track was only available for a limited window of time the client did not want to chance missing or forgetting a key measurement. By utilizing laser scanning, measurements of the visible track, objects, etc., are captured indiscriminately leaving little chance of not capturing all of the necessary information the first time.
